Yes, you really can elope in France for under €10k! It is however important to be reasonable about what that budget will get you. Additionally, be careful how you frame it to vendors, especially venues.
💡IMPORTANT CULTURAL NOTE: In France, the concept of an “elopement” does not yet exist. If you say ”wedding,” you risk being turned away or quoted traditional wedding prices. They’re imagining 100 guests, chaos, and expense. Therefore, when communicating with venues, tread with caution – especially when contacting hotels and champagne houses. Discuss with your photographer how to frame your inquiry. Sometimes, it’s best if the photographer reaches out on your behalf in French.

A very quintessential and affordable elopement in France would take place at a vineyard. The rolling hills, wide vistas and free entry make the option beautiful and affordable. Just be aware that vineyards are active ‘agricultural’ locations. We can’t control or foresee if/when tractors will pass by, farmers will be working, or crops sprayed etc.
Best season: Post harvest. October has the best colours imaginable, and is quiet due to timing after the harvest.
Permit: none required

Mont Saint Michel is the perfect elopement location for those imagining an extremely dreamy and simple seaside elopement in France. The marshy fields around the castle are free and can be accessed at any time, but you’ll want to go at sunrise to avoid crowds. The beautiful stone architecture of the village and abbey make for a romantic post-ceremony adventure as well. But full disclosure: Mont Saint Michel is a popular destination for influencers and photo tourists, and by mid morning, will become uncomfortably crowded. Timing is extremely important. You must bring rain boots or waterproof shoes for walking through the marshy areas as well. Crucially, you need to pick a day where sunrise and high tide coincide for the most dramatic effect.
Best season: spring when the shallow riverbeds still have water; in a hot, dry summer or by fall, the marshes are dry
Permit notes: for photographing inside the Abbey, a two hour permit is €150-180

No. While “expensive” is always relative, it is one of the most affordable regions in France to elope, as well as the most festive!
There is no exact rule. However, above 5-10 people, the day begins to necessitate a lot more cost, planning and logistics. If the goal of the elopement is to be easy, stress free and small, then I would set your guest limit somewhere there.
Tread with caution when contacting vendors – especially hotels and champagne houses. Most want nothing to do with large “weddings” and will not understand the word “elopement.” Have your French speaking elopement photographer reach out on your behalf in French, so nothing is miscommunicated.
Yes, although unless you reside or have citizenship here, I don’t recommend it. French bureaucracy isn’t very romantic. Plus, you cannot get legally married anywhere but inside a courthouse. Most couples who elope in France have a symbolic ceremony only.
The cheapest way to elope in France is to elope in Champagne, just the two of you, in a free public space (vineyard). The second cheapest way to elope in France is with a local Champagne Photographer who will help you arrange all of it, and document it.

In this quieter region of France, working with a French speaking local is invaluable. A bilingual photographer who knows the area will make sure your elopement planning is frictionless. They’ll connect you with reliable vendors, give you tips on travel through the area, and smooth out any planning issues long before they arise.
The average cost of a specialised elopement photographer in France is €4,000 – €7,000 for a full day.
